I would like to raise a question regarding the Kochi Water Metro Project which is being implemented by Kochi Metro. The project cost is envisaged at Rs.747 Crores.

Why cannot Kochi Water Metro Project utilise existing facilities including the jetties of the Kerala State Water Transport Department (KSWTD).

If they could come up with a viable agreement, it would be beneficial to both parties. What are the obstacles which prevent KSWTD from leasing out or renting out jetty berthing facilities to Kochi Water Metro?

What are the benefits?

  • Existing infrastructure could be improved without the need for building new jetties.
  • Cost savings for Kochi Metro Rail
  • KSWTD could generate a new revenue stream from Kochi Water Metro by renting out its facilities
  • Improvements to infrastructure are made to the same to meet the standards of Kochi Metro Rail.
  • Daily commuters and tourists benefit from improved facilities.
