This is an update on RTI filed with Road Safety Commissioner, Kerala which was forwarded to respective departments:-

As per information received from State Public Information Officer, State Crime Records Bureau, Thiruvananthapuram; the available information on private bus accidents in Kochi forthe period from 2016 to November 2019 is as given below:

Response from Information Officer, Traffic East Enforcement Unit, Edappally, Kochi City

As per information received from Information Officer, Traffic East Enforcement Unit, Edapally, Kochi City; the available information on private bus accidents in Kochi with respect to action taken on errant bus drivers and penalties on bus owners within Traffic East, Edapally:-

  • Total 377 Petty cases
  • a) 279 IPC, 185 (a) of MV Act: 2 Nos
  • b) 283 IPC: 2 Nos
  • c) 283 IPC, 120 (b) KP Act: 39 Nos
  • d) 279 IPC: 75 Nos
  • TOTAL: 100 Nos

In response to the RTI query on reasons as to failure of state authorities in curbing rash driving by private bus drivers in Kochi, the Traffic East Enforcement Unit of Edapally as provided the below given reasons:-

  • There are no sufficient CCTVs in congested junctions
  • Unavailability of sufficient strength of Police Personnel
  • The protest march and picketing conducted by the private bus labour with their owners on the road when legal action has been initiated.
